League Fixture

LUTTERWORTH  1st XV: 37pts    v    LINCOLN 1st XV:  12pts

Although bottom club Lincoln proved to be better than they looked on paper,  Lutterworth made hard work of notching up their ninth consecutive win, which takes them to second position in The League. It goes without saying that the pack again dominated but mired themselves down with a huge penalty count and consistently failed to get quick ball to what is becoming an increasingly talented and dangerous back line.

During the first fifteen minutes the visitors looked marginally the better side, Lutterworth were handing out penalties like sweets but ironically took the lead when Bobby Williams converted from a Lincoln infringement. Indeed Williams kicking was the highlight of the afternoon, apart from missing an easy effort in front of the posts in the dying minutes, he found the target from everywhere on the park.

After twenty-five minutes winger, Ben Stretton took the ball over for the first of his two tries, inevitably set up by Morne Barnardo. The second period began with Jim Croucher dropkicking three points but the Lincoln scrum half ran in a fine try to take the score to 13 to 5. Stretton bagged number two but constant pressure by Lincoln in the home side’s twenty two was rewarded by a somewhat controversial penalty try, bringing the visitors within spitting distance of Lutterworth’s lead. However Lutterworth responded twice in succession with two copybook lineout catch and drive scores, both taken over by hooker, Alan Johnson. Morne Barnardo had been kept fairly quite all afternoon by some desperate midfield defending but just prior to the final whistle he eventually broke free of his shackles carving through the middle to touch down under the posts for one of his hallmark tries that Williams mystifyingly failed to convert.
