COALVILLE 1st XV: 14 V LUTTERWORTH 1st XV: 31
Lutterworth delighted their loyal band of travelling supporters with their best performance of the season so far at fortress Coalville. Their eventual victory was ground out during a hard fought first half played against the wind, the half time score of seven to five in Coalville’s favour did not reflect the visitor’s superiority in nearly all aspects of the contest. After the break the home side could do little but attempt to soak up the relentless pressure and limit the extent of the winning margin.
The Lutterworth pack were at their finest and handed out a textbook lesson in the gentle arts of scrummaging, rucking and mauling. It was no surprise when after ten minutes, Lutterworth’s skipper and number eight, Dennis Hall, who after turning the ball over in his side’s favour, was on hand to score from a move beautifully set up by Gareth Court who was having the game of his life in the stand-off position. You could criticise Lutterworth for their penalty count but for once this was due more to the intensity of the forward play rather than ill discipline and half way through the first half Hall was awarded a yellow card. The ensuing ten minutes allowed Coalville some breathing space and they took the lead with an opportunistic fly hacked interception by their scrum half. Lutterworth should have regained the lead before the break but failed to capitalise on another Gareth Court defence busting break through the Coalville lines.
With the wind at their back, Lutterworth began to look invincible, pack leader, Adam Conway was omnipresent and inspirational and the platform set by the forwards started to reap the deserved rewards. One of many sublime scrums enabled full back, Charlie Roberson to put Lutterworth back into the lead. Soon afterwards, back row, Chris Gregory was unstoppable from the back of a five-metre scrum. The visitors were unfortunate to lose open side flanker Geraint Davies with concussion; he was key in the massive possession advantage secured by Lutterworth. Alan Johnson added another to his season’s try tally in classic style from a lineout catch and drive. Down but not out Coalville came back at the visitors and after camping on the line for several minutes were awarded a penalty try for consistent infringement by the determined Lutterworth defence. Lutterworth saved the best to last when centre, Morne Barnardo, who had been back to his best form all afternoon, devastated the Coalville defensive lines and the other half of the double act, fellow centre, Bobby Williams was at his elbow to go over in fine style for a try which he duly converted.
Scoring: 0-5; 7-5;7-12; 7-17; 7-24; 14-24; 14-31.
