Under 16 Match Report

SUNDAY 9th October 2005

County Cup 1st Round

Belgrave 7pts  V  Lutterworth 21pts

A very solid performance in the end by the boys who had a very shaky start for the first 10 mins having to defend in our own 22 for much of the time. We then started to get our act together. Our first try came about when Aaron Dann looped with Robin Eager in the centre who in turn looped back to take the ball on, Robin then passed to Nick Daley who broke through the first tackle and offloaded in the 2nd to release Tom Goldsworthy who beat the remaining players with pure pace to score in the corner. Robin then stepped forward and converted from 2 metres in from touch.

The second try was created by sustained pressure from the forwards and on the fifth phase Alex Smedley the number 8 drove to the line only to be held up at the last second, the ball was recycled to Tom Hooper, the scrum half who drove over from a couple of metres. Again converted by Robin Eager. The team then came under enormous pressure from the Belgrave boys and only extremely good defence on our own line for about 5 minutes kept them from scoring. Whilst under this pressure Robin Eager broke from our 5metre line and raced upfield, when he was tackled the back row arrived and recycled the ball to the forwards who drove on the ball eventually coming back to the backs again and fast hands saw Tom Goldsworthy in space and he rounded the winger  to score. Again converted by Robin Eager. The second row players of Gavin Smith, Sam Robinson and Luke Evans won 80% of the oppositions line out as well as all of ours with some excellent catching, and throwing in by the hooker Owen Stean.

Belgrave scored late consolation try, but the boys held on for a hard won victory.
