Under 14 Match Report
SUNDAY 23rd April 2006
Lutterworth 15pts V Coalville 29pts
Firm under foot but no markings
After the excesses of the tour it was good to be back home playing in front of a partisan crowd. All awaited this match to see how good Coalville were as the newly appointed county champions. The game started well for Lutterworth with some very strong defence by LRFC culminating in a scrum on our 5 metre line which was won against the head by George Hargreaves. The ball came out to Ryan Bruce who with a good chip ahead set the ball up nicely for the backs to pour through and put pressure on Coalville. After some serious rolling mauls and darting attacks from the LRFC backs the pressure was rewarded with a penalty. A difficult kick for Ryan who hit the upright. Alex Chan though was first there on the follow up and very nearly napped an opportunistic try.
The pressure continued and eventually Bam powered through some poor defence and scored under the posts. Converted by Ryan. Coalville came back strong at the kick off and forced a quick penalty which after some indecision was taken as a kick at goal , successfully. At the restart Josh Connor caught our own kick and charged down field and set up some intense pressure on the Coalville line. A break away by Coalville though saw the wing run in from his own half but the subsequent kick was missed. At the restart Greg Taylor caught the ball and powered into the ruck , ball came out and a long kick into touch set the ball nicely back at the half way line. At the line out Josh Williams, in an unusual turn of speed, managed to stop the scrum half from getting the ball away and kicked down field. Alex Dann dug the ball out and managed to get the backs away again. Bam charged into the opposition and with the help of Callum and Mikey and the rest of the pack managed to drive over the line. Conversion was good. Mikey had one of his best games today and was an inspiration to the forwards and was a constant thorn in the Coalville side.
Unfortunately LRFC took the foot off the pedal and with some sloppy tackling allowed Coalville back into the game with an interception try . After this Coalville got the scent of blood and started to string some good phases of play together which resulted in another couple of tries. Disheartening for the team as in truth the supporters and the players all knew that this was a game that they could have and should have won. I couldn’t finish the report without commenting on the referee. WHO gave him that shirt? It must be the worst shirt we have seen all season. Although the colour did suit him
