Under 14 Match Report
SUNDAY 19th February 2006
Melton Mowbray 24pts V Lutterworth 5pts
Conditions: Wet / Soft.
Lutterworth had a total of 8 squad members missing on Sunday through Holidays and injury, and it really did show. Melton Mowbray seemed up for the task and Lutterworth let them get away with a mugging.
For the first 15 minutes Lutterworth were camped on the 22 of Melton and with better handling and passing a big score could and should have been produced. It was Melton who scored first and this was a breakaway try with Lutterworth again sending a pass astray and the Melton centre pounced on it and ran through without being challenged to score 5 – 0. Melton now settled down and they were strong in the scrum and their backs were getting a lot more ball. It did help with there being no offside today and I thought that a protractor was needed at times when the scrum was formed. Still onwards and upwards still time to claw the game back. Halftime the score was 5 – 0 to Melton.
In the second half Lutterworth started brightly but once again they found themselves a further score down, this time it was a deserved score Melton had put Lutts under pressure and after the forwards had done their best a try was conceded. The conversion was scored as well so Lutts were now 12 – 0 down. Lutterworth did get on the score sheet and it was Ryan Bruce who scored. Ryan ran on to a loose ball then kicked forward and collected the ball with the Melton full back beaten the score was completed. The conversion was missed and the score was now 12 – 5. Melton replied immediately when Lutterworth cleared a kick from the back and the Melton centre ran through only for Joe Leeks to produce a great tackle. Unfortunately the ball went loose from the arms of the Melton centre and one of their players picked it up and scored under the posts, the conversion was scored and the score was now 19 – 5. The final try of the game was scored with a minute to go, a now defeated Lutterworth pack dropped their heads and Melton barged over for another score 24 – 5. Lutterworth had been beaten and had really not been at the races today. They will learn from this defeat and they will work hard in training to rectify their mistakes.
Coaches man of the match: Not enough candidates. But Alex Vostanis came away from the game with a lot of credit.
Coaches Comments. "The game was a test of character; the opposition seemed to want the game more. We panicked when under pressure and this resulted in a loss of discipline, which showed in our lines. We know where we went wrong and we will put it right".
