Under 14 Match Report
SUNDAY 12th February 2006
Lutterworth 27pts V Northampton Old Scouts 0pts
Conditions: Soft
Old Scouts Tied in Knots.
Lutterworth started as they meant to carry on, camped deep in the Northampton Old Scouts half. Within the first five minutes Dominic Hurr and Alex Dann went close to scoring, the latter being held up on the line. After three scrums Lutterworth had won all three against the head, with Old Scouts struggling to cope with the power of the Lutts pack. We were all looking forward to the first score of the day. This was another day when Calum McDougall had been fed raw meat - he looked very strong- and with the determined runs of Jamie Steventon there looked a good balance within the team. After 12 minutes the first score of the day occurred when Mikey Ingham picked up the ball from the back of a ruck and fed Connor. Big Josh could not be stopped and the first score was posted 5 – 0. Lutterworth were playing with confidence and lots of discipline whilst the Old Scouts pack seemed content in wingeing as much as possible. The next try was not long in coming when Alex Vostanis once again from the back of a ruck picked up the ball and sprinted through the heart of Northampton’s pack to score underneath the post’s., Ryan (Hot lips) Bruce converted making the score 12 – 0. Just before the break Connor put in a vital tackle to stop the Northampton winger getting through thus keeping the score 12 – 0 at half time.
The second half started with a great flowing passage of play involving six players with Jamie Steventon showing great hands and feet only to be caught just short of the line. Northampton at last pushed forward and the winger got the ball and legged it down the line. Unfortunately he found Ben Stone up for the challenge. Ben dived at the legs of the winger and the ball went in to touch. Joshua Connor scored his second of the day, again from the back of a ruck. He picked up the ball and dived (fell) over the line making the score 17 – 0. Barney Barker stole the ball and looked to have got through but the fingertips of the Old Scouts fullback just managed to impede him and Barney was down.
Ryan and Joe made a great switch between them but unfortunately the next pass went a stray and the move broke down. Paddy Radley was back to his best today and the more the game went on the stronger he looked, as to did Jack Lewis. Jack tackled well and he looked a lot sharper when reacting to certain situations. Lutterworth scored again and once more it was big Josh Connor who scored, this time Josh jumped and caught the ball at the line out and burst through to score, getting his hat trick of tries 22-0. The next score came when Joe Leeks sprinted down the line and fed Dominic Hurr. Dominic crossed the line to score giving him reward for all the effort he put in today, 27 – 0. J ust before the finish Ryan Bruce caught a fabulous high ball and sprinted through only to be caught on the fifth attempt, bad luck as this would have been a great try.
Coaches Comments: "All the coaches were pleased with the discipline and skill of the pack. Well-done boys keep going, keep working on the finer points of the game."
Coaches Man of the Match: Shared between Jack Lewis and Paddy Radley. Both hard worked very hard with powerful displays.
