2nd TEAM Match Report
Saturday 24th April 2006
Lutterworth 2nd XV: 24pts v Mkt Bosworth 3rd XV: 0pts
This was the last match of the current season and Lutts wanted to go out in style. Market Bosworth are renowned for their strong forwards and the ability to drive the ball hard and close to the breakdown. When the game started Lutts received the kick and were turned over in the resulting maul. They soon got their heads together and won the ball back and the ensuing passages of play were very good. The forwards were recycling good ball to allow the backs to play out wide. It was here that there was plenty of space and with the pace of the Lutts wingers were able to take play deep into the Bosworth half.
The first score came from winger Dan Ford who scythed his way through the defence then cut in field to link with centre Ben Stretton who scored. Ford converted.
The kick off was well taken by Faulds who was able to take the ball on and set it up for the rest of the pack to secure. Then scrum half Carter sniped from the base and cut open the defence. The ball was passed out wide but the final pass was deemed to be forward. Bosworth tried to come back but the Lutts defence was strong and the backs continued to cut open the Bosworth defence.
The second score from Lutts came from a Bosworth lineout on the Lutts five metre line. The ball was deflected off a Lutts arm and Carter was able to kick the ball upfield. The chasing players were able to get the ball back after the Bosworth fullback fumbled the catch and the ball was passed out to winger Ford who jinxed and swerved his way through the defence to score. This was not converted.
The second half started with Lutts total dominance. The ball was rucked and mauled hard and players were putting themselves on the line to ensure that Lutts kept the score line. Bosworth tried in vain to break the Lutts defence but their attacks were just cut down by the dominant Lutts back row.
Dan Ford cut through the defence again a ran in the last 20 metres unopposed to cross the line but the ref deemed that he didn’t put the ball down to score so Bosworth got a reprieve. This did not last for long though as Lutts came back at them with everything they had. Five minutes later Stretton received a kick and cut through the Bosworth defence to score under the posts, but this was disallowed because the ref decided that a Lutts retreating player accidentally obstructed the defence. This was a harsh call as the player was about ten yards from the attacking centre.
Three quarters through the half there was an injury break when a Bosworth flanker needed treatment for a cut head. This break gave Lutts time to make some substitutions. When play resumed Lutterworth picked up where they had left off with some long pressure kicks to test the full back. Lutts turned over ball from a breakdown and then the ball was spun wide for replacement winger James Sercombe who caught the ball and went on the outside to score. This was converted.
The Lutts final score came from a Bosworth scrum on their own five metre line and the Lutts pressure was too great, when replacement scrum half Jezz Bell tackled the Bosworth scrum half and the ball came loose for number eight John Dalby to pick up the ball and cross the line. Bell converted.
Final score for the final game of the season 24 – 0 to Lutterworth.
