2nd TEAM Match Report
Saturday 11th March 2006
Lutterworth 2nd XV: 34pts V Nuneaton 2nd XV: 14pts
Lutterworth had a great afternoon considering that they had no substitutes to call upon. The Nuneaton side were renowned for their hard play and large forwards, so Lutts were expecting a hard time.
With in about twenty minutes from the start Lutterworth were moving well up field and the ball was moving across the pitch. The Home side gradually progressed deep into the opposition 22 and they were awarded a lineout five metres out. The ball was won cleanly by Faulds who dropped the ball into the arms of flanker Roger Phillips who was speeding around the front of the line to score. This was not converted. Within a couple of minutes though Nuneaton came back and scored a try from a quick penalty and this was converted.
Lutts mauling performed well all afternoon and the next score came from such a move. The ball was taken in to the maul and when moving forward the ball was moved to the back and when the prop Woodward moved it opened a gap to allow flanker Ben Stretton to burst through the maul and run the remaining forty yards to the try line. This was converted by Bell. Lutts next score came from a kick ahead that was taken by Jim Sercombe, when he went into contact the rush of forwards allowed the ball to come back for Fly half Jezz Bell dummied then went for the line himself. He also converted his own score. Just before half time Lutts were awarded a penalty and Bell stepped forward to convert it.
The second half Lutts were determined to extend their score line. They were awarded a lineout on the 5 metre line after some superb pressure. The resulting line out had Faulds catching clean and dropping the ball to Phillips again to crash over the line to score. This was not converted. Nuneaton got another score when they were awarded a penalty form a line out in the Lutts 22. This was converted. But Lutts were not done yet. Lutts absorbed the pressure and kept their heads and eventually the hard work paid off when a long passage of play ended in a long floating pass to full back Ian Smith to cross the line to score. Bell converted.
From then on the Nuneaton side tried all they could to turn the game but the home side was able to keep their discipline, to earn a hard fought win. Final score 34 – 14 to Lutterworth.
