2nd TEAM   Match Report

Saturday 11th February 2006

Lutterworth  2nd XV: 20pts v Hinckley  2nd XV: 10pts  V

Lutterworth played the return fixture at home this week hoping to copy the events of last October, with a substantial win.  However the team was a little different because of injury etc.

The game started well with the team putting together good passages of play and when the ball was sent wide real damage was being inflicted on Hinckley.  The first score came after a chip and chase from winger Ben Stretton who gathered the ball from a Hinckley fumble and then was able to off load the ball to hooker Steve Stott to go over the line to score.  This was not converted. The second score came in much the same fashion as the first, by sending the ball wide and allowing Stretton’s pace to do the work.  He put in another chip over the heads of the defence and gathered to score under the posts.  Jezz Bell converted.

Lutterworth went in to the second half 12 – 0 up.  The game was far from over and the Lutts scrums were not performing to their full potential but were still able to hold the Hinckley pack.  The games frantic pace and hard tackles had players from both sides taking time on the side lines to stem the flow of blood.  Nothing serious just knocks to noses and lips! Hinckley had resurgence mid way through the half and was able to get deep into the Lutts half and after some sustained attack the defence finally broke and they were able to score.  This was converted.  A few minutes later they were back and this time Lutts were determined not to let the defence break and they held strong.  But unfortunately Lutts gave away penalty for hands in the ruck and this was converted.

In the last quarter Lutts fought back and taking frequent visits into the Hinckley 22 with full back Ian Smith putting some great downfield kicks for the wingers Stretton and Sercombe to chase.  Centre Shaun Van Heerdon put in a great defence breaking run and powered through only to be brought down just before the line, but the ref deemed the tackle high and Bell converted the awarded penalty.  The Lutts forwards rumbled down field with ruck after ruck and finally the defence started to weaken as the Lutts forwards came powering in to turn the ball over when Hinckley tried to counter attack, and after a long pass out to the wing, flanker Steve Lamb nearly scored in the corner.  The ball was recycled and Scrum half, Bell took the ball on the tight blind side to score by the flag.  This was not converted.

Final score 20 -10 to Lutterworth.
