LUTTERWORTH 2nd XV: 0pts VIPERS 2nd XV: 13pts
This hard fought battle in less than ideal weather conditions was always going to be a hard fought game, but nobody expected it as hard as it was.
From the kick off Lutterworth were awarded a scrum because the kick did not go 10 metres. The scrummage was tight and the ball won well but the opposition just kept coming in hard to defend. Some good kicking with the aid off the tail wind put Vipers down in the Lutts 22, Viper’s won ball from the line out and made a break for the line. But some very resilient defence from the home team ensured they did not cross the line. It was during this run off play that a viper’s player had to be replaced because of a severe knock to the head and a wound that took time to control. A penalty was awarded, which they kicked.
Lutterworth were not going to be put off by this and came back hard and with some good recycling of the ball allowed Lutterworth to get deep into the Viper’s 22. Vipers were then penalised and Lutterworth opted to kick. The kick was missed and the vipers were allowed to clear there line.
Vipers tried again and again to break the Lutts defence but could not, with one attempt being grounded before the line then held up by the Lutterworth back row. From the awarded scrum instead of clearing the line Lutts centre Shawn Van Helsing dummied and then sprinted free out of the 22 and put a pass in to the wing, but the pass was dropped. If it had gone to hand it was a certain try!
The second half there was plenty of action on and off the ball! The referee made some very strange calls that not only confused the player but infuriated the spectators. Lutterworth came close to level the scores with a penalty but it bounced of the post and was kicked clear by Vipers.
Late in the half when Lutterworth were absorbing more pressure close to there line the Vipers drew in the defence and when they got the ball they had an overlap to allow them through to score. This was converted.
Final score 13 – 0 to Vipers.
