2nd TEAM Match Report
Saturday 7th January 2006
Lutterworth 2nd XV: 19pts v Old Newtonians 2nd XV: 0pts
The Christmas break had done the Lutterworth team a power of good as they resumed normal service for the rest of the season. The game got off to a flying start with play moving at a frantic pace that Lutterworth just absorbed and went along with. The scrums were being won against the head and the driving mauls were just too much for the Old Newts side.
Lutterworth were by far the stronger team in all aspects of the game but the ability to score just eluded them. In the first half Old Newts had two attempts at goal but fortunately the penalties just swept wide of the posts. Half time ended 0 – 0.
Lutterworth continued in the same vain as the first half. Constant pressure and eventually something was going to give. Wing Dan Sheasby had to go off with a suspected dislocated shoulder after a superb run to gather a kick only to fall wrong in the tackle and have the following players pile over the top. Lutterworth’s first score came from a passage of play that involved some excellent lines of running from the backs and newcomer Jason Wood crashed through the defence to off load to full back Ian Smith coming at full speed to take the ball over to score. This was not converted. Lutts second score came from a full team effort with backs and forwards taking the ball on and setting ruck after ruck. No-one was being greedy and they just kept chipping away at the last few yards to the try line when flanker Steve Lamb broke off and crossed the line. Jezz Bell converted.
Lutts last score came from a similar situation and the forwards rumbled up the field and ten metres out the ruck was collapsed and the inspirational prop Jannick took the ball on and with a couple of deft side steps crossed the line to score. Bell converted the try. Final score 19 - 0 to Lutterworth.
