2nd TEAM   Match Report

Saturday 1st October 2005

Old Newtonians 2nd  XV: 20pts  V  Lutterworth  2nd XV: 7pts

This was the first second team league fixture of the season.  The Lutts team was a strong one but this was not enough to beat a determined Old Newts side.

From the start the Lutterworth were able to gain possession and use the ball well but for a minor infringement on the last pass.  This pattern was to dominate the rest of the game.  After twenty minutes the Old Newts side linked well and were able to score out wide.  This was not converted. The Lutterworth side were determined not to give up and fought hard but again the infringements kept Lutts from getting onto the front foot.  Lutts were able to dominate the scrums but as soon as they tried to do anything with the ball the ref found a reason to stop play!

The home side defended hard and rucked Lutts off the ball at times but Lutts never gave up.  After a string of infringements from Lutts, Old Newts were awarded a penalty that was dually kicked. Just before half time Old Newts were able to score in the corner after breaching the Lutts defence. This was not converted.  Lutterworth returned play hard and took the ball deep into the Old Newts 22 and after being awarded a couple of Penalties for killing the ball Lutterworth were still unable to get over the line but Old Newts had a player sin binned for there troubles.

The second half, Lutts should have dominated because of the man advantage but the game didn’t go to plan.  Old Newts scored an interception try and converted it.  Lutterworth also managed to get a man sent to the sin bin for allegedly persistent play of the ball on the floor.  Lutterworth still fought hard and after a couple of substitutions to reinforce the pack they start to make moves deep into the Old Newts half.  And after constant pressure and quick pick and go from the base of rucks, Lutts made it to the line only to have O.N’s go over the top to kill the ball.  The Ref awarded a penalty try. Williams converted it.

The rest of the half was to see Lutterworth constantly go close but never to cross the line again.  Final score 20 – 7 to Old Newtonian’s.
