2nd TEAM Match Report
Saturday 1st April 2006
Daventry 2nd XV: 37pts v Lutterworth 2nd XV: 17pts
This game was the semi final of the Clomwell Cup. The game started well with Lutterworth taking the ball on strongly, the rucks and mauls were both hard and furious. The first Lutts score came from a driving maul off a lineout. Number 8 Dave Baker drove forward strongly only to be stopped short of the line but scrum half Bell took the ball on to score. This was not converted. Daventry came back hard but the Lutts defence was strong and they were unable to breach the line. Lutterworth infringements unfortunately lead to Daventry taking three points. Lutterworth took the ball wide but Daventry were always able to counter the attack and it was when the ball was wide that Lutts conceded two tries. One of these was converted. Half time score 15 – 5 to Daventry.
In the second half Lutts tried to play more expansive rugby. Unfortunately a few mistakes lead to two tries from interceptions by Daventry and they ran in unopposed on both counts. These were converted. Lutterworth then regrouped and decided to keep the ball in tight and when they did things started to fall in Lutts favour. Off the back of a lineout the ball was taken forward by Alan Johnson and the power of the forward took the play close to the line. The Daventry packs were unable to resist the pressure and try was scored by Jezz Bell. This score took Bell’s personal tally this season to 100 points. Unfortunately this try was not converted. Daventry were awarded a penalty and again this was kicked, thus keeping Lutts at bay! Lutts then put together a superb passage of play and the ball was recycled quickly and this allowed the back to finally work to their potential, with Fly half Roger Clarke drawing the defence and then put a pass in behind the Daventry centre to put Williams in at the corner. Williams converted his try. The last score to make sure Lutts were out of the cup came when Daventry were able to loop around the wingers to score the try. This was not converted. Lutts tried to come back but when close to the line the final pass was knocked on giving Daventry the win and a final score of 37 – 17.
