Non League Game
LOUGHBOROUGH 1stXV: 27 V LUTTERWORTH 1st XV: 16
This dreary game of rugby did nothing to raise the temperature of the small but intrepid band of Lutterworth supporters who braved the artic wind sweeping across the featureless Loughborough playing fields. The Lutterworth squad arrived in person but not in spirit and there were few positives to be taken away except perhaps for a fine display of kicking by stand-off, Tim Jeffs, who managed to keep the visitors in sight of the lead for most of the game.
Loughborough took the game away from Lutterworth during the first twenty minutes, notching up three tries and a conversion largely thanks to their fly half who opened up huge gaps in the visitors’ defence. Lutterworth replied with two successful penalty attempts and a drive-over try touched down by hooker, Alan Johnson. Another Loughborough try was added late in the half but Jeffs came back again with three more points to keep Lutterworth still in touch at the break, tantalisingly close at 16 points to 22.
Loughborough added a fifth try during a second period that was as bleak as the weather but Lutterworth had nothing more to offer as the game descended into a drab display unworthy of a team that although conceding several defeats this season have played a great deal of creative and entertaining football. Lets hope that this will be a wake up call when Lutterworth return to their league campaign next week hosting Stockwood Park at Ashby Lane.
