Non League Game
STEWART & LLOYDS 1st XV: 31 V LUTTERWORTH 1st XV: 12
The Corby ground always proves a difficult venue but Lutterworth failed to perform for such long periods during this game that S & L found it relatively easy to amass a big early lead and ultimately inflict the largest points defeat that Lutterworth have suffered this season.
It took Lutterworth thirty five minutes to score their first points by way of a lineout catch and drive burrowed over in the corner by hooker Paul Riley, his tenth league try of the season. Bobby Williams slotted the difficult conversion. However prior to this the Corby side had hammered Lutts with a penalty and two converted tries, their second try came from their most effective tactic on the day, a driven maul of some forty metres.
During the final minutes of the first half Lutterworth eventually woke up but for the second forty minutes they needed not only to scale the considerable up hill slope of the pitch but also a seven to seventeen points deficit. Lutts were unlucky not to score when centre Matt Soulsby’s incisive run broke open the Corby defence but his well timed pass was knocked on just short of the line by full back Jim Croucher. Croucher made amends early in the second half when he broke down the wing, chipped over the defence and touched down in the corner. With the score standing at seventeen to twelve the visitors were still in touch but went back to sleep in the final twenty minutes allowing S & L to score two more converted tries ending the day easy winners.
Scoring: 0-3, 0-10, 0-17, 7-17
