1st TEAM   Match Report

Saturday 12th November 2005

LEAGUE:  MIDLANDS 3 EAST (South)

LUTTERWORTH  1st XV: 43  V  HUNTINGDON 1st XV: 5

Lutterworth who have promised so much this season finally pushed all the right buttons to comprehensively demolish Huntingdon. As has become the norm the front five laid the foundations to allow the back row of Dennis Hall, Simon Deacon and Adam Conway to run riot but it was lock Andy ‘Ronnie’ Williamson who set up unstoppable centre, Nick Hutt for the first try after only five minutes. Williamson and fellow second row Ian Evans continued the good work with a determined and disciplined performance that typified the whole team. Five minutes later Tim Jeffs took the ball over after a driven maul from a penalty lineout powered the Stags back towards their own line. Jeffs had brought his kicking boots to the feast and ended the day converting four of the seven tries.

After thirty minutes, from the platform set by another well-executed lineout, Jim Croucher set off on a scything run finally handing over to flying winger, Phil Daffern, who went over in the corner for number three. Minutes later Stags beleaguered defence cracked under the pressure applied by Gareth Court and Mark Barber and hooker Paul Riley was on hand to score his sixth league try of the season. Just before half time and after another devastating drive by the forwards, captain, Dennis Hall neatly fed the ball out on the blind side to Phil Daffern who put the game out of Stag’s reach with number five.

The second half was a hill too steep for Huntingdon to climb but they did come back strongly at the start and when on the only occasion that they spun the ball wide they were rewarded a consolation try by their full back Hugh Williams. The home side resumed control and added two more converted tries; the first a great combined effort by centres Hutt and Williams. The second brought due reward to prop Paul Wilford for yet another afternoon’s Herculean performance.
