Non League Game

HUNTINGDON 1st XV: 13  V  LUTTERWORTH  1st XV: 10

As has so often been the case this season Lutterworth did almost enough in the first thirty minutes to secure victory but then allowed Huntingdon to gradually but inexorably claw their way back to win by three points.

Lutterworth’s pack took charge from the start and were rewarded with an early try touched down in the corner by hooker Paul Riley from a well executed lineout catch and drive. Centre Bobby Williams slotted the difficult conversion to give the visitors a seven-point lead.  Despite dominating the first half hour, the visitors failed to increase their lead, letting at least two opportunities to put the game out of Huntingdon’s reach go begging. Huntingdon came back strongly during the last ten minutes of the first half but solid Lutterworth defence kept the Stags at bay until they converted a penalty in the closing minutes.

The second half was an inconclusive affair with both sides defending well. After fifteen minutes Bobby Williams slotted a penalty but shortly afterwards Huntingdon hit back with a converted try to level the scoreline at ten points each. A draw looked a distinct possibility but with only five minutes to go the referee awarded a debatable penalty decision to Huntingdon claiming that Lutterworth had brought down a defensive scrum in front of their line. Stags Fly Half, Matt Durant eagerly grasped the opportunity and coolly converted to give his side a three-point margin. To their credit Lutterworth hit back with everything they had and narrowly failed to score in the closing seconds from a penalty tap and go close to the Stags try line.

A disappointing result for Lutterworth after their demolition of Huntingdon at Ashby Lane earlier this season.  Lock Ian Evans, especially impressive in the lineout, was named Lutterworth man of the match

Scoring: 7-0, 7-3.      10-3, 10-10, 10-13.
