LEAGUE: MIDLANDS 3 EAST (South)
LUTTERWORTH 1st XV: 13 V STEWART & LLOYDS 1st XV: 22
Lutterworth started with great conviction taking the lead after only four minutes, number eight, Adam Conway, touching down from the back of an unstoppable scrummage that pushed the visitors back a full ten metres and over the try line. S & L came back strongly and their backs were denied a score only by a series of fine tackles from Ian Johnson, Lee Donovan and Phil Daffern. The Corby side continued to gain ascendancy and although missing two penalty attempts they took the lead after 25 minutes with a converted try by centre, Greg Cook. Lutterworth were kept under intense pressure, defending stoically and breathing a sigh of relief at being only two points adrift when the first period finished at 5 –7.
The visitors’ pack was given ‘a lesson in scrummaging’ (quote from the S & L coach). The master class was provided by Lutts’ skipper, Paul Wilford, who gave his opposite number in the front row a torrid time during an afternoon he will want to forget. However despite dominating the set piece and then taking the lead with a Tim Jeffs penalty Lutterworth’s open play was disjointed and unconstructive and the visitors took advantage by way of another try and a converted penalty to open up a seven point lead. Lutterworth kept themselves in contention with some fine defensive work, open side, Joe Wilson leading the tackle count for the second week running and hopes were raised when replacement hooker, Paul Riley, took the ball over in the corner with Jeffs’ difficult conversion attempt to level the score line hitting the post and leaving the home side a mere two points behind. In the closing minutes S & L’s danger man, Cook, struck again his converted try winning the day for the visitors.
