2nd TEAM   Match Report

Saturday 5th March 2005

Lutterworth 2nds 0pts  V  South Leicester 10pts

Lutterworth’s home game this week was a friendly against a team in the next division up.  This was a hard fought game that Lutterworth should have won.

The scrums started in Lutterworth’s favour with coach – come – prop Tommy Williams steeping in to start the game for a late arrival.  His years of experience proved him to be more than a match for his opposite number as the Lutterworth scrum powered forwards. The South Leicester side were there for the taking, good forward play and linking with the backs gave the two wings plenty of exercise on this cold day, but they just could not cross the line.  The Lutterworth line out suffered a bit with some inconsistent throwing in and some spoiling tactics from south Leicester, but they still managed to get plenty of ball.  Off one lineout the Lutterworth pack were driving forward with the ball when somehow the South Leicester second row stole the ball and ran to the line unopposed.  This was converted.Lutterworth put in some good passages of play and the their new scrum half Tom Carter played exceptionally well and was not afraid of taking on the big men one on one.  Half time score 7-0 to South Leicester.

In the second half Lutterworth kept the South Leicester side under control.  The Line out started functioning better and Lutterworth also adopted some of their opponents spoiling tactics, which did not please the opposition.Lutterworth had plenty of ball but always seemed to kick it up field just when it looked as if something could materialise.  Mid way through the second half South got a penalty for Lutterworth going over the top of a ruck and they dually converted this. In the last minutes of the game Lutterworth turned over ball in there own twenty two and Flanker Adrian Sheasby took the ball and cut open the defence.  When tackled he managed to pop the ball to another player who got tackled on the half way only to get the pass away to Sheasby again who carried deep into the South’s Half.  When the ball was recycled and spun to the backs it was a certain try but Full back Al Slater was unable to see the open space behind the defence and put a kick through only for this to be gathered by the South Leicester wing sweeping back.

It was an afternoon of missed opportunities with varying weather conditions and a final score that flattered the opposition.
