2nd TEAM   Match Report

Saturday 20th November 2004

 Daventry 2nds 7pts  V  Lutterworth 2nds 0pts

Lutterworth visited Daventry for this friendly match.  There was still snow present on the pitch for this match and although there were a couple of players missing due to injury the team was as strong as ever, with two former colts in there first season of senior rugby playing on the flank for Lutterworth.

Right from the kick off Lutterworth new it was going to be a busy day tackling around the park.  Daventry came right at them and there rucking and mauling was good but when they had the ball they just could not break through the tenacious defending.  When Lutterworth had the ball they took the game right back to Daventry and for long periods of time they were down in the Daventry half only to have the ball turned over and then kicked back down field.  However Lutterworth’s lineout was superior, with Lutterworth taking a lot of Daventry ball, as well as there own.The game was very fast and expansive with moves incorporating forwards and backs all the way down the pitch, but neither side could capitalise and make that final move to the try line.  The half time whistle blew with the scores still 0 – 0.

After the break Lutterworth came out fast with Number 8 John Clarke and the new flanker James Prince turning over some good ball for the rest of the Lutterworth pack to secure for the backs to work there magic!  Again Daventry came back and put the pressure on Lutterworth with a half break up the wing only to be stopped be Dan Sheasby who put in a try saving tackle and allowed the Lutterworth second row of John Dalby and Iain Faulds to get back and help turn over the ball.  During this sequence of events Sheasby was injured and was replaced by Andrew Hall who played the first half at scrum half.In the last twenty minutes Lutterworth were camped on there own five-meter line and the aggressive defence with some very determined first up tackles kept Daventry at bay.  They tried the push over scrum and drive from the base of the break down but the Lutterworth pack was too strong in defence although they were pushed back at times.  Daventry’s only break came when they shipped the ball from a five-meter scrum and a move in the centres allowed them to break a tackle on go over the line to score.  This was converted.

Lutterworth fought on to try and bring the scores back but could not do it before the final whistle blew.  The final score 7 – 0 to Daventry.
