1st TEAM Match Report
Saturday 29th January 2005
LEAGUE: MIDLANDS 3 EAST (South)
LUTTERWORTH 1st XV: 36 STONEYGATE 1st XV: 6
Lutterworth recorded their tenth league win in a row overpowering and outplaying a poor Stoneygate fifteen. After heavy overnight rain the slippery surface made expansive running rugby difficult but the home side were workmanlike in their demolition of Stoneygate.
Stoneygate’s problems began in the front row where the dominance of Lutterworth’s Paul Wilford, Marcus Stevens and Alan Johnson was total, it is not a good experience to meet these three head on during a Saturday afternoon! The Lutterworth forwards consistently drove their opponents backwards in the scrums and driving mauls giving scrum half, Gareth Court, the platform and time to set his backs up for some fine attacking play.
Stand off, Tim Jeffs, opened the scoring after ten minutes, spotting a gap in the stretched defence he darted through for a fine individual opportunist try. Full back Charley Roberson this time set up by Jeffs scored shortly afterwards and a successful penalty attempt by ‘Gate settled the first half score at 12 to 3.
Another slotted penalty by the away side seemed to spur on Lutterworth and they replied and sealed the fixture with a spree of fine tries. Lock Ben Husthwaite, currently enjoying a good run of form, picked the ball from the back of a ten metre scrum for number three. Gareth Court, vigilant as ever, went over with a typical short sharp sniping run. Flanker, Simon Deacon, capped another fine individual performance firstly punishing sloppy defence by being in the right place at the right time and then just before the final whistle he linked well with fellow flank forward Rob Sands for his (Deacon’s) third try in two weeks. Number eight, Adam Conway and centre, Nick Hutt, were towers of strength punching hole after hole in the Stoneygate lines but once again this was another good display by the entire eighteen man squad.
Lutterworth will have their work cut out next Saturday when they travel to top side Towcester in a clash that one way or another will impact upon the final league positions.
