1st TEAM Match Report
SATURDAY 28th August 2004
Matlock V Lutterworth - Trials
Matlock 1st XV: 27 Lutterworth XV: 26
Matlock 2nd XV: 10 Lutterworth XV: 25
33 players travelled from Lutterworth to take on Mansfield’s 1st and 2nd teams. The two games were played as four quarters, the majority of the Lutterworth squad featured in both games.
In the first game Matlock started well but after ten minutes of pressure from the home side it was Charlie Roberson who took the ball over to give Lutterworth an early lead. The game continued at a fast and furious pace and silly mistakes allowed Matlock to score two tries one of which was converted. During the second twenty minutes the Derbyshire side’s winger scored two more quick tries but Lutterworth stayed in touch with Roberson scoring again from a lineout. The third quarter also belonged to Matlock who scored a fifth try but the final session was dominated by Lutterworth, flying winger Phil Daffern capping an excellent performance with two tries both converted by Tim Jeffs. Unfortunately the game finished with Lutterworth just a single point adrift.
In the second game Lutterworth were consistently in charge, Andy ‘Ronnie’ Williamson snatched two tries playing for the first time at senior level in the second row, James Prince and Ben Husthwaite scored one apiece and Phil Daffern took his day’s tally to three.
Head coach, Dave Turner, was very pleased with the outcome; ‘despite losing one game by one point, the games were proof positive that the commitment by all of these players during pre season training has led to levels of fitness and skills that bode well for the coming league campaign which starts next week at Leighton Buzzard’.
