1st TEAM Match Report
Saturday 23rd October 2004
LEAGUE: MIDLANDS 3 EAST (South)
STONEYGATE 1st XV : 0 LUTTERWORTH 1st XV: 18
The appalling weather failed to dampen Lutterworth’s spirits as they overpowered a lack lustre Stoney gate at Covert Lane.
Lutterworth took control of the game right from the start and the first ten minutes were played entirely in the home side’s half of the field. Tim Jeffs' well struck penalty attempt hit the upright in the opening minutes and shortly afterwards hooker Paul Riley went over the line for a disallowed try. However after 10 minutes Jeffs did convert his second penalty attempt. Stoneygate under consistent pressure conceded another penalty which Jeffs duly slotted. The best rugby was played in the rain soaked and slippery conditions towards the end of the first period when Jim Croucher took the ball over for a converted try culminating several phases of glorious play by the entire side.
The second half was very much a repeat of the first with the away side dominating in every department. Converting possession into points was difficult mainly due to the conditions but Lutterworth finally slammed the door with a typical massive period of play by the forwards when they spent what seemed like an age camped on Stoneygate’s line. Typically, Skipper Dennis Hall picked the ball from the back of a five metre scrum and burrowed over for another converted try to seal a well deserved victory.
Next Saturday Lutterworth are hosts to in form Wellingborough at Ashby Lane, kick off 2.30pm.
