1st TEAM   Match Report

Saturday 20th November 2004

LEAGUE:  MIDLANDS 3 EAST (South)

LUTTERWORTH  1st XV: 36     DAVENTRY 1st XV: 20

Lutterworth continued their recent good form and extended their unbeaten run to five with this win over Daventry. The result never really looked in doubt but it was significant that Daventry only visited the home side’s twenty-two on four occasions and each time they scored.

The home side once again came out all guns blazing and after five minutes were awarded a penalty which Tim Jeffs narrowly missed, however within minutes some fine attacking rugby resulted in centre Bobby Williams setting up lock Ben Husthwaite for try number one. As usual the pack’s scrummaging was relentless and a massive effort five metres out allowed scrum half Gareth Court to take the ball over for number two. Daventry soon replied in a similar manner after their first incursion into the Lutterworth half. The defenders illegally brought down a driving maul by the Lutterworth forwards and a penalty try was awarded. Daventry’s second concerted attack resulted in a fine converted try by their number eight. Jeffs kicked a penalty attempt but late in the first half Daventry this time were awarded a penalty try. The home crowd were somewhat bemused by the half time score of 22 to 17 after forty minutes during which Lutterworth had eighty per cent possession and looked a far superior outfit.

After stern words from coach Dave Turner at half time Lutterworth performed better in the second half. Some fine linking rugby after another five metre scrum let in flying Phil Daffern and Tim Jeffs returned to his excellent kicking form with three out of three penalty attempts whilst the visitors could only add three points to their first half tally.

Despite some poor defending during the first half it was another good all round performance by Lutterworth, scrum half Gareth Court and flanker, Simon Deacon were both outstanding.
