1st TEAM   Match Report

Saturday 19th February 2005

LEAGUE:  MIDLANDS 3 EAST (South)

LUTTERWORTH  1st XV: 22    STEWART & LLOYDS 1st XV: 17

Lutterworth’s regular place kicker, Tim Jeffs, was unavailable this week but Bobby Williams stepped in with some style, his one hundred per cent effort in this game gave the home team the edge over their close rivals, Stewarts and Llyods.

Williams hit his first penalty attempt after five minutes to take Lutterworth into an early lead but shortly afterwards sloppy defending allowed the Corby side to score a soft try. Consistent poor discipline characterised by one infringement after another by S & L gave Williams the opportunity to slot two more penalties. The visitors countered with a dangerous attack that was brought to a conclusion by a try saving tackle from Lutterworth winger, Dave Simpkin but ten minutes later they did take the ball over from a five metre scrum for their second score. Lutterworth’s finest moment came when fly half Jim Croucher’s pass was taken at speed by Nick Hutt. Hutt crashed through the S & L lines, sucking in defenders, finally passing to Charlie Roberson whose well timed supporting run allowed him to take the ball over with ease. Williams duly converted as well as kicking two more penalties to give the home side a 22 to 10 half time lead.

The second half was characterised by solid defending against the Corby side who battled bravely to get back into the game. However the home team always looked well in control until the closing minutes of the game when they were reduced to thirteen by way of two yellow cards. S & L scored a controversial try which was grounded from waist high but allowed and their subsequent conversion from in front of the posts resulted in a final scoreline that was somewhat flattering to the visitors
