Saturday 18th December 2004

LEAGUE:  MIDLANDS 3 EAST (South)

DAVENTRY 1st XV: 8     LUTTERWORTH  1st XV: 18

Lutterworth began this fixture where they left off after last week’s outstanding performance against Northampton Old Scouts. The first twenty minutes of the game was played almost entirely in the home side’s half. Lutterworth took the ball over three times and looked as though they would put fifty points on a lacklustre Daventry. Although the visitors should have gone ahead in the opening minutes of the game when they failed to score from a five-metre scrum it was flanker, Rob sands who opened the scoring after seven minutes from a lineout catch and drive. Soon afterwards number eight, Adam Conway tore open the Daventry defence and laid the ball off to Ben Husthwaite, winger, Phil Daffern was on hand to go over in the corner. The opening quarter was capped by an opportunistic individual try by lock, Andy Williamson. Unusually this season, during which so far he has been outstanding, Tim Jeff’s kicking was off target and he failed to convert any of his three attempts. Daventry finished the period coming back with a penalty before half time.

Lutterworth seemed content with their early lead and the game descended into a comedy of errors without either side managing to gain control. Jeffs did manage to find the target from a long range penalty attempt and Daventry secured their only try late in the game from a driving maul after they were awarded three successive penalties close to the defenders’ line.

Lutterworth coach Dave Turner although somewhat disappointed with his side’s performance took succour from another away win which now means they have gone for nine games without defeat.

The league campaign resumes in the new year on the 8th January when Rushden and Higham visit Ashby Lane.
