1st TEAM Match Report
Saturday 9th October 2004
LEAGUE: MIDLANDS 3 EAST (South)
LUTTERWORTH 1st XV: 18 TOWCESTER 1st XV : 27
Despite playing some prolonged periods of impressive rugby, Lutterworth failed to make an impression on top of the table Towcester.
Both sides started with determination setting the tone for a fine game that was much closer than the final scoreline suggested. The away side opened the scoring with an early successful penalty attempt. Lutterworth came back strongly with a fine attacking move by the backs who looked certain to score, however a lucky interception by Towcester was taken all the way back to the home side’s line, giving Towcester a 10 to 0 lead. Lutterworth replied with flanker Mark Ellis and lock, Adam Conway combining well to give Conway the touch down. The away side ended the half with another opportunistic converted try to give them a commanding half time lead of 17 to 5.
The second period was dominated by the Lutterworth pack who provided the platform for prolonged attacks into the Towcester half, the home side were rewarded with a converted penalty and two fine tries by Bobby Williams and Charlie Roberson. Towcester added another converted try and a penalty and although were possibly fortunate to return home with the two points must be commended for their clinical finishing and ability to turn chances into tries.
Next Saturday Lutterworth 1st XV travel to Old Laurentians for the second round of the Powergen Cup.
