LUTTERWORTH 1st XV: 39 LOUGHBOROUGH 1st XV: 22
Two converted tries from interceptions late in the second half resulted in a score line flattering the visitors after a game in which they were outclassed by Lutterworth in every department. As usual the Lutterworth front eight dominated , inspired by another fine performance from cornerstone prop Marcus Stevens. Equally inspiring in the threequarters was centre Nick Hutt who was the immovable object in defence and the irresistible force when attacking and not for the first time, all three Johnson brothers, Ian, Allen and Dave, were in the thick of things.
Lutterworth were off the mark very quickly with a Bobby Williams try set up from a five metre scrum. Loughbrough soon replied from a lineout catch and drive which resulted from one of many penalties awarded against the home side early in the game. Lutterworth now looked vastly superior and winger Jim Croucher took the ball over after a deft interception with Tim Jeffs slotting the conversion and then a penalty attempt to finish the first period 17 to 5.
After the break Lutterworth delighted the home crowd with some fine open rugby, the third try was Bobby Williams second and was the culmination of a fifteen man effort. Nick Hutt capped his match winning performance with try number four and skipper Paul Wilford stamped his authority on the game with a huge single handed push over for number five.
The Lutterworth first team squad of around 25 players is now working well and the last few weeks have proved that up and coming young players can take the place of regular first teamers without diluting the quality of the rugby, providing headaches not only for the opposition but also for the selectors
