LEAGUE:  MIDLANDS 3 EAST (South)

TOWCESTER 1st XV: 20     LUTTERWORTH  1st XV: 5

Towcester showed why they are top of the league grinding out a decisive win from a contest that was closer than the final scoreline suggested. This was a game that promised much and the first fifteen minutes lived up to that promise with both sides keen to stamp their authority on the game. The visitors took the upper hand when after some fine ball carrying by back row forwards Adam Conway and Rob Sands, scrum half, Gareth Court shipped an inspired pass that set off the Lutterworth backs on a move straight from the training ground. Centre, Nick Hutt set off on a typical barn storming run and full back, Charlie Roberson drew in two defenders to set up winger, Jim Croucher, who cleverly  went  inside of Roberson to score a fine try.

The home side came back strongly with two tries and a penalty to go into the break with a lead of 15 to 5.

Lutterworth clearly felt that the lead was not insurmountable and spent the first ten minutes of the second half camped in Towcester’s half. However the inability to turn possession and pressure into points has become Lutterworth’s Achilles heal and by way of a succession of elementary mistakes they came away unrewarded. Towcester then took command and scored a final try to take the game out of the visitor’s reach.

This was a frustrating afternoon for Lutterworth, who at times looked far better than their opponents but it was their inconsistency and lack of ability to turn possession into points that lost them this crucial contest.
