LEAGUE: MIDLANDS 3 EAST (South)
STOCKWOOD PARK 1st XV: 25 LUTTERWORTH 1st XV: 28
Lutterworth extended their unbeaten run to seven after this hard fought contest at Stockwood Park.
Once again the visitors started brilliantly with centre Nick Hutt typically blasting through a surprised and confused defence. A penalty was conceded and Tim Jeffs put Lutterworth three points ahead after only one minute of play. After the restart Lutterworth were back on the attack but failed to capitalise on their initial dominance. Stockwood quickly came back off the ropes and put together fifteen minutes of cohesive attacking rugby, which eventually brought the reward of a converted try. The game was developing into an enthralling to and fro battle and after several phases of incisive attacking Lutterworth’s number eight, Adam Conway, carried the ball over for the first of his two tries. However Stockwood Park took first half honours after another converted score gave them a 14 to 11 lead.
Unbelievably, during an afternoon when the formidable Lutterworth front row was always in charge, the home side started the second half scoring from a scrum which they took against the head. Skipper, Paul Wilford, gave the visitors a one point lead when he went over from a lineout catch and drive and Adam Conway capped a fine afternoons performance touching down for a push over try. Flanker, Simon Deacon, once again worked unceasingly all afternoon, his relentless tackling helped to deny the home team the advantage. Stockwood kicked consecutive penalties to level the score at 25 all. Jeffs continued his fine kicking form, which has now placed him at the top of this league’s kickers table, with a superb effort but the excitement was not over until Stockwood Park’s fly half missed a match levelling penalty attempt in the dying seconds of the game.
Next Saturday brings league leaders Northampton Old Scouts to Ashby Lane, kick off 2.30, the bar will open at 1.30!
