Under 17  Match Report

SUNDAY 29th February 2004

Syston 34pts  V  Lutterworth 5pts

Lutterworth under 17s crash to a disappointing defeat away at Syston

With a much weakened side Lutterworth under 17s struggled to reach their recent form and crashed to a disappointing defeat away at Syston. With several players out due to injury and many with other commitments, Lutterworth just managed to field 15 players, whilst Syston had many to spare.

After their last encounter, just 2 weeks ago, Syston had obviously strengthened up their forwards to such an extent that Lutterworth often seemed to be on the ‘back foot’, even so the Lutterworth lineout and scrum both functioned very well, even winning opposition ball.

Syston scored an early try in the corner after a breakaway run by their fullback, this was followed by some determined pressure by Lutterworth, who crossed the Syston line twice, but unfortunately the ball was held up on both occasions. Syston scored another try just before half time to bring the score to 0-10 at half time.

Early in the second half, a knock on by a Syston player just beyond the half way line, was waved on by the referee and resulted in a try. Lutterworth players insensed by this apparent injustice, responded with a breakaway try of their own. With the score at 5-15 the game looked set to come alive……….

However, Syston scored three more tries unanswered tries, two of which were converted, to bring the final score to 5-34. A disappointing result, but a game played in good spirits by both sides.
