Lutterworth under 17s Tour to Holland 30th April 2nd - May 2004
Match Report – Bassets RFC – 1st May 2004
After a slightly delayed kick off, Lutterworth got off to a slow start and were forced to defend strongly as Bassets made repeated attacks on the Lutterworth line, however Lutterworth withstood this early pressure and successfully cleared their line. In this first passage of play, the sides looked evenly matched and the game appeared to be finely balanced, however once Lutterworth woke up, the result was never in doubt.
The first try for Lutterworth came after about 10 minutes of balanced play, from a set scrum about 7 metres out in the corner, Tom Holman picked up at No 8 and stepped inside the blindside winger to score. The second try came from some excellent backs running play, with Scrum Half Mick Brightmore receiving a return pass and zigzagging through Bassets defence , he was tackled just short, but managed to stretch out over the line to score, converted by Sam Brookes. Lutterworths third try was scored by Rob Hughes, from a lineout the ball was quickly released down the line and he looped round the winger to receive a return pass and score in the corner. Brilliant handling by the backs.
Undeterred, Bassets then mounted a very strong attack and were well inside the Lutterworth 22 when the attack broke down, Pete Bouchard playing on the wing, received a great missed pass, side-stepped his opposite number and ran the length of the field to score under the posts, converted by Sam Brookes. Half time score 24-0 to Lutterworth.
Early in the second half, Bassets were again on the attack when they lost the ball in a ruck, the ball was quickly passed down the line and out to the left wing, Fergus Cunningham, who broke through the tackle from his opposite number, stepped inside the outside centre and ran over the line around under the posts to score, converted by Sam Brookes.
Lutterworth then seemed to go to sleep, Bassets forwards mounted a series of attacks and after several phases of play scored almost under the posts, this try was successfully converted. The final try of the match was scored by Rob Hughes, after a tap penalty, the ball was passed quickly down the line, who broke through several tackles to score under the posts, converted by Sam Brookes.
Final Score 38-7 to Lutterworth.
Bassets were great hosts and they have an excellent pitch and clubhouse, we were made to feel very welcome and despite the score, Bassets players remained fully committed right to the end of the game.
