Lutterworth under 13’s at  Syston 7’s Tournament

Lutts are Syston 7’s Champions!

On Sunday Lutterworth under 13’s travelled to Syston RFC to take part in the Syston 7’s Junior Rugby Festival.

League stage:

Drawn in Group A, Lutts came up against Syston ‘B’, Loughborough and Nuneaton. Lutts had a great day, winning all three-group games with only one try against and clinching a spot in the semi-final.

The details of the results were:

43-0 vs Syston ‘B’:

Two tries each from Greg Littlewood and Matt Everard, with a try each from Bradley Milner, Tris Crawshaw and Ashley Parrott. Milner and Littlewood grabbed two conversions each.

40-0 vs Loughborough:

A great hat trick from Parrott, another two from Littlewood and one from Crawshaw. Conversions came from Littlewood (3), Will Keeling and Milner.

 21-5 vs Nuneaton:

Another two tries from Littlewood and one from Parrott. Littlewood converted all three.

Lutts U3’s vs Melton Mowbray - Semi-Final:

Lutts took on Melton Mowbray in the semi-final and although they had most of the play, it was a tough test.

Zac Wilkins opened the scoring after a good pick up on half way saw him out run and then drive through the defence. The game was end to end as Melton stole the ball and made a good run under the posts, to score. The sides went in 5-5 at half time.

Lutterworth had all of the play in the second half, although it looked like extra time was looming. However Matt Everard knew different as he received the ball on opposition 22 and put his head down and drove his heart out. A great score, which sealed the 10-5 win for Lutts and a place into the final.

Lutts U3’s vs Syston ‘A’ - The Final:

Lutts met Syston in the final, as they had won their close semi-final against a tired Nuneaton. The final of this excellent tournament was played in beautiful weather and in front of a huge crowd.

Lutts got off to a great start as a good kick found its way within 5 metres of the Syston line. From the opposition line out Wilkins stole the ball and drove over the line for his 2nd of the day. Minutes later Lutts were pushing forward as the ball went loose on the Syston 22. Dan Holmes picked up and out run the defence to score an excellent try. This gave Lutts a 10-0 half time lead.

Lutterworth upped the tempo in the second half as great hands saw the ball moved from Holmes and on to Littlewood, who broke through the defensive line to score a try, which he then converted.

We then saw what could only be described as the ‘Try of the Tournament’. The ball was passed through 5 sets of hands and onto Littlewood, who made a superb run down the wing to score. This is what sevens rugby is all about.

Syston managed a consolation try, which was converted. With seconds to go their was just enough time for another Lutts try as Matt Everard outfoxed the Syston defence with an outrageous dummy, to score another excellent try. This was successfully converted by Milner to make the final score 29-7 to Lutterworth under 13’s.

The entire squad of 12 went up to collect the trophy and the Syston official presenting the trophy said:

“I want to thank Lutterworth for playing some breath taking rugby, they are well deserved Syston 7’s champions for 2004”

Chris Everard, coach of this superb young side said

“I’d like to thank the boys for some great rugby, played in extremely hot conditions.  This exciting team has showed that they can play 15’s, 10’s and now 7’s, with some great style and class.”

Thank you to both Lutterworth and Syston for a great final and congratulations Syston RFC for an excellent tournament. Also, a special well-done Lutterworth under 13’s for making it 34 wins from 34 games this season.

They now go to Coalville on Sunday to meet Oadby Wyggs in the final of the Leicestershire County Cup, for their last game of the season. Good luck Lutts, lets make it 35 from 35!
