Under 13 Match Report
SUNDAY 14th March 2004
Lutterworth 35pts V Leicester Forest 24pts
With a 10’s tournament at Banbury next week, the senior players did some training, so it was down to the squad players, with support from a number of senior players to take on Leicester Forest. This selection policy made for a fantastic game between two evenly matched teams, with Lutterworth running out 35-24 winners, despite the atrocious weather conditions.
In the first few minutes, Lutts were pressing forward as the ball broke loose. It was well picked up by Zac Wilkins, who cleverly drove through the defence to score the first try. Forest pushed forward and forced a try after Lutts missed a vital tackle and they scored to the left of the posts. Normal service was resumed for Lutts as they took a quick tap penalty, which was taken at speed by Greg Littlewood and he made a great run to force his way over the line.
They then pulled further ahead as they found themselves on the opposition 22. Good hands saw the ball shipped out to Will Williams, who made a great drive through and over the line. Try number four was soon to follow as Littlewood made a superb run from his own half. He beat every tackle and got to within inches of the try line before he was pulled down. Joe Sullivan was on his shoulder in support as he picked up and dived over the line. Forest then quickly pulled one back, which made it 20-10 at half time.
Leicester Forest used the wind, which was now in their favour to disrupt the Lutts defence. They scored and converted to get within 3 points of the home side. Was the undefeated run about to come to an end?
This superb side do not understand the meaning of the word defeat as despite the howling wind in there faces, they pulled together some great forward play, to keep the game in Forest’s half. This pressure paid off as Sullivan made a great drive for the line, which was repelled, but Williams was there again to pick up and role over the line to score his second. Minutes later the move was replayed as Lutts camped out on the Forest line. The ball eventually broke free to James Lloyd, who forced his way over the line.
Forest then scored the best try of the game as one of their players made a superb run from half way to score under the posts. This was again converted.
With seconds left Lutts pushed for that final try which would make the game safe. Concerted pressure on the Forest line was well defended until scrum half Lloyd again picked up loose ball and darted over the line to make the final score 35-24 to Lutterworth.
A tough test for Lutts and a fantastic advert for rugby at this level. Well done both sides for a great game.
