WRFU National Challenge Cup 2003/04  -  2nd Round

Oakham Ladies: 24  V  Lutterworth Ladies: 26

Sunday saw Lutterworth travel to Oakham for the second round of the WRFU
National Challenge Cup (North).

Lutterworth went to Oakham as reigning Champions so the pressure was on
to reach the next round. However a recent "friendly" match between the
two teams saw a depleted Oakham side beat a full strength, lack lustre
Lutterworth.

This time though it was Lutterworth who started the game short of
players, fielding only 13 , due to several players being out with
injury. The visitors  spent a large part of the first quarter camped in
Oakham's 22 but a break made by their dynamic back line found
Lutterworth trailing by 7 points. Oakham then began to utilise their
overlap, threatening to cross the line several times before scoring
another converted try. Just before half-time Lutterworth's No. 8 dived
over to score a try which was converted by scrum-half Zoe Smith.

A half-time talk. by Coach Mick Welham, made Lutterworth realise that
the game was by no means out of  reach and the second half saw a
determined effort to close down their backs. Continued pressure saw
Oakham make a large number of handling errors that Lutterworth
capitalised upon and fly-half Helen Potter break through several tackles
to cross the line.

With less than 5 minutes to go a try was scored by Oakham's forwards
from a rolling maul and they took a 24-19 lead. Lutterworth received the
restart, which was set by the forwards before being passed to Potter,
having broken through Oakham's defence again the fly-half''s pace took
her from her own half to cross the line. A successful conversion from
Smith saw Lutterworth take victory 26-24 in the dying minutes.

A dedicated and courageous effort from Lutterworth, probably the best of
the season so far and hopefully a turning point for the rest of the
year.
Come and see Lutterworth WRFC play their next home league game against
Greyhounds on 7th December.

Final Score 26-24
