SATURDAY  17th April 2004

LEAGUE:  MIDLANDS 3 EAST (South)

STOCKWOOD PARK 1st XV: 22     LUTTERWORTH 1st XV: 15

Lutterworth’s league campaign came to a close with this disappointing and lacklustre performance against second from bottom Stockwood Park. Despite losing six consecutive games, the Ashby Lane side have managed to hang on to third place thanks only to their impressive early season form.

The  indications were that Lutterworth would take charge and finish the season in some style. A high wind and very poor playing surface were partly to blame for a scrappy start from both sides, Stockwood Park took an early three point lead, however flying wingers, Jim Croucher and Phil Daffern combined for a majestic try taken over by man of the match, Daffern. Croucher took the honours with the second try, which was converted by Tim Jeffs. Before half time, Jeffs kicked a penalty to give the visitors a creditable 15 to 3 lead.

Lutterworth failed to add to their score during the second period instead they decided to continually kick the ball into the grateful hands of the Stockwood Park backs and not bother to tackle them as they ran in three soft tries, two of which were converted. The home side appeared as surprised as they were delighted by the final score of 22 to 15 handed to them on a plate.
