1st TEAM Match Report
SATURDAY 13th March 2004
LEAGUE: MIDLANDS 3 EAST (South)
LEIGHTON BUZZARD 1st XV: 20 LUTTERWORTH 1st XV: 19
Lutterworth travelled to Leighton Buzzard looking to consolidate their strong league position but returned home disappointed. Buzzard started at pace and it took staunch defence to keep them at bay. Partway through the first half, an incident in the Lutterworth dead ball area led to three players being sin-binned and Lutts had to re-organise without numbers 10 and 12. During this period their opponents crossed the line to open the scoring at 5-0. Once again at full strength, Lutterworth piled on the pressure and some fine mauling up the hill led to tries by Adie Sheasby and Tim Jeffs, one of which was converted by Jeffs, giving Lutterworth a 12-5 half time advantage. The game looked secure when early in the second half, centre, Paul Concar, crossed for the third try which Jeffs duly converted for a seemingly unassailable lead of 19 to 5. However, the Buzzards never gave up and with the wind behind them clawed back first to 19-10 and then 19-15. With two minutes to go, the Lutterworth defence was breached again allowing Buzzard to regain the lead by a single point. Despite frantic last minute efforts by the Lutterworth players, the game ended at 20 to 19. leaving the away side to reflect on what might have been.
