SATURDAY  10th January 2004

LEAGUE; MIDLANDS 3 EAST (South)

LUTTERWORTH 1st XV: 13      TOWCESTER 1ST XV: 10

In the dying minutes of the first league fixture for over a month Towcester came very close to snatching victory from the home side.

Lutterworth started the game in some style looking well organised in all departments. After five minutes Tim Jeffs slotted a penalty attempt for the home side to go three points in front. Shortly afterwards a well executed chip by fly half, Jim Croucher was picked up and carried by Lee Donovan who beat two defenders and deftly passed the ball to newly acquired centre, Paul Concar. Concar finished the move in great style, carving a gap through the Towcester defence and diving over for his well deserved try, converted by Jeffs. The first period was won easily by Lutterworth who should have scored on two more occasions from set pieces in the Towcester twenty-two. Despite failing to turn possession into points, Lutterworth looked well in control and early in the second half Tim Jeffs kicked another three points to give the home side a 13 to nil lead. Towcester, down but certainly not out, stepped up a gear and by way of a converted try and penalty, closed the gap to three points. The final kick of the game was a Towcester penalty attempt in front of the posts just inside the Lutterworth half. The Towcester fly half, Gag Evans, pulled his kick to the left and the home side left the field feeling very fortunate to have taken the two points from a game which they should have won by some margin.
